BETWEEN REVOLUTIONS

Dir. Vlad Petri | 2023 | 70 min | Romania, Croatia, Qatar, Iran | Activ Docs, Restart, undisclosed Iranian film studio

In 1970s Bucharest, Zahra and Maria form a deep friendship while studying at university. As political turmoil brews in Iran, Zahra is forced to return home, leaving Maria behind. Over the next decade they maintain their connection through a series of letters, chronicling their struggles as women fighting for a voice in repressive regime oppressed societies. Despite the distance and obstacles, their longing for each other remains strong. A poetic film based on historic video-materials in which politics are inter-twined with poetry and intimate stories – with state propaganda and letters – with archives.

Director Vlad Petri: Between Revolutions is a film about the not-so-distant past that also strongly resonates with today’s reality – the recent events in Iran with women fighting for their rights, just like in the 1979 revolution. Their cries also express Zahra’s and Maria’s desires: “Zan, Zendegi, Azadi!” – “Woman, life, freedom!”
