COEXISTENCE, MY ASS!
Dir. Amber Fares | 2025 | 95 min | USA, France | My Teez Production, Home Made Docs, Little Big Story, Wavelength, Intuitive Pictures | 12+
In the centre of Coexistence, My Ass! is Israeli activist-comic Noam Shuster Eliassi and her one-woman show. She has grown up in a two-language two-culture environment – in a commune jointly created by Israelis and Palestinians who believed in peaceful co-existence. Raised as a peace activist with experience in working for the UN, she however decides to become a comic, so that she can joke using sharp satirical humour about all that is happening in Hebrew, Arabic and English.
The five years of shooting the film is a messy time – Noam’s creative work at Harvard University is disrupted by the pandemic, and later her birth region is once again overrun by violence, and her world becomes skewed. Using her growing popularity in the Middle East, Noam criticizes political hypocrisy, invites her fellow humans to recognize complicated truths and reminds them of the possibility to live differently.
In English, Arabic, Hebrew and Farsi with subtitles in Latvian and English.
The commune Oasis of Peace (Neve Shalom / Wahat al-Salam) was created in the 1970s to promote mutual cooperation, respect and equality between Jews and Palestinians. It is the only commune of this type in Israel. Currently there are some 70 families living in the Oasis, and there is still a bilingual school and a peace education centre operating.
