LOOKING FOR HORSES

Dir. Stefan Pavlović | artTrace Foundation, KAMEN Artist Residency, Momento! Films | 2021, The Netherlands, Bosnia and Herzegovina, France | 88 min

Zdravko is a Bosnian war veteran who finds peace in nature and in solitude and has lived for almost 20 years on an island in the middle of a lake. Stefan is a young documentary filmmaker who decided to get acquainted with his grandmother’s homeland. Conversations between two strangers involuntarily grow into a touching friendship. What determines a person’s worth? In close-up – Balkan nature, a spartan lifestyle, unhealable war trauma and a longing for goodness and a connection to others.

“Unexpectedly fresh experimental documentary…original and very touching piece of art.” Cineuropa 2022

The Bosnian war was an international armed conflict that took place in Bosnia and Hercegovina from 1992 until 1995. Peace talks began after NATO got involved in the conflict, bombing Bosnian-Serb army positions. It’s estimated that more than 100 000 people were killed in the conflict, and at least 2.2 million became refugees. Until February 24, 2022, the Bosnian war was considered the most damaging conflict in Europe since WWII.
