NO ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM

Dir. Clara Kleininger-Wanik | 2022 | 76 min | Square Film | Poland, Romania | U

The time has come for change in the Bucharest circus. A law forbidding the use of wild animals in circuses forces animal trainers Adi and Mioara, like their other circus artist colleagues, to seek fresh ideas on how to retain the audience’s interest in their shows. A world-famous show director, who works with Cirque du Soleil, arrives from Las Vegas to help the circus transition into a world-class act. Over the course of a few months, the troupe must learn new acrobatic tricks and previously unused techniques.

The movement to outlaw the use of wild animals in circus acts in Europe began in the beginning of the 2000s, and the first country that formalized this law was Austria in 2002. In Romania, like in Latvia, the law forbidding the use of wild animals in the circus came into effect in 2018.

In Romanian, French and English with subtitles in Latvian and English.
