In 2014 in Amsterdam, an exhibition of Crimea’s archaeological treasures was opened. When Vladimir Putin’s government announced Crimea’s annexation to Russia, The Netherlands museum professionals had to determine to whom to return the exhibition’s items – to occupied Crimea’s museums or the National Museum of History of Ukraine in Kyiv? A documentary legal drama in which the fates of people, antiquities and states are intertwined.
The Ministry of Culture of Ukraine is currently assessing the crimes committed against cultural heritage. This website contains information about Russian-inflicted losses in museums, libraries, architecture, and other areas. Per UNESCO data, in the last six months the Russian army has destroyed more than 170 cultural locations, including 13 museums, 8 libraries and 74 churches.
