Barbara lives in Accra, the capital of Ghana. She is a charismatic and self-confident young woman, but at times, when the harmattan, a choking wind from the Sahara, blows, her courage disappears. The wind conjures up images from the past that shatter her peace of mind. When she was eight, Barbara’s parents sent her to live with relatives in the city, and she became part of a world full of abuse and fear. Over the years, Barbara found remarkable strength within herself to fight for her fate.

With the help of her older brother Kweku and a priest, Father Peter, Barbara gradually overcomes the demons of her past and confronts those who wronged her. When Harmattan Blows is the story of an independent woman who heals her past traumas, dreams and chooses to live.

In Ghana, child labour remains a significant challenge, with hundreds of thousands of children working in agriculture, fisheries, and households — often in hazardous conditions and separated from their families. These practices are driven by poverty, limited access to education, and economic pressures that lead families to rely on children’s work from an early age.
