Dir. Edyta Wróblewska | 2024 | 80 min | Poland | Szymon Kudła – Inspiration and Energy, Pinot Films | 7+ | BSD 2020, BSD 2023
Barbara lives in Accra, the capital of Ghana. She is a charismatic and self-confident young woman, but at times, when the harmattan, a choking wind from the Sahara, blows, her courage disappears. The wind conjures up images from the past that shatter her peace of mind. When she was eight, Barbara’s parents sent her to live with relatives in the city, and she became part of a world full of abuse and fear. Over the years, Barbara found remarkable strength within herself to fight for her fate.
With the help of her older brother Kweku and a priest, Father Peter, Barbara gradually overcomes the demons of her past and confronts those who wronged her. When Harmattan Blows is the story of an independent woman who heals her past traumas, dreams and chooses to live.
In English with subtitles in Latvian.
Ghana has widespread child labour practices – hundreds of thousands of children work in agriculture, fisheries and households, often in dangerous conditions and away from their families. This is due to poverty, limited educational opportunities and the view that children, from early childhood on, have to help provide a living for their families.
