The film project was presented at the Baltic Sea Docs 2020.
During the 2020 presidential elections in Belarus, Pavel, Denis and Maryna – three actors from the Belarus Free Theatre underground theatre – get caught up in the current of mass protests, propelling them to join the other protesters on the wide boulevards of Minsk to loudly protest freedom of speech and a long-awaited change of power. The regime’s militia reacts by unleashing sheer brutality upon the protesters, and the theatre troupe members along with many others are arrested. The country is on the brink of civil war. The film is a very personal insight into the events, following the people who are fighting for freedom and democratic rights.
The film’s main characters are currently in exile from Belarus. The film’s creators, while filming the demonstrations on the streets in September 2020, barely escaped arrest themselves. A UN Human Rights report from July states that since August 2020, more than 35,000 people have been detained in Belarus. According to Human Rights Centre Viasna’s data, there are currently more than 600 political prisoners in Belarus prisons.
In Russian and Belarusian with Latvian and English subtitles.
